Bird flu outbreak reported in eastern India
India, Jan 15, 2010
In eastern India's province of West Bengal, an outbreak of bird flu has been reported, prompting authorities to immediately start a culling operation in the area, according to the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS). The outbreak was reported on Thursday (January 14) in the Murshidabad district, and The Telegraph quoted Utpal Bhandra, sub-divisional officer, as saying, "So far, 4,000 birds have died." Officials are deploying five teams to commence culling operations as of Thursday, and IANS reports that at least 20 more teams will be put into action on Friday (January 15) in almost a 1.5 mile (3 km) radius of Hazrabati and Nagar areas of Khargram block. The magistrate for Murshidabad district, Parwez Ahmad Siddiqui, said he hoped that the culling drive would be done in two to three days. Siddiqui confirmed that the magistrate had sent two dead birds' serum samples to the Bhopal lab for bird flu testing following information received of a bird flu outbreak in their district. Already, three isolation wards have been opened at the Khargram block primary health center, Nabagram block primary center and Kandi sub-divisional hospital to tend to bird flu infections. Last year, a bird flu outbreak was also reported in Bengal that started from the Khargram block. There were no reports of any human infections.
