Death toll at 515 as nine more succumb to Japanese Encephalitis in northern India

India, Nov 20, 2009

In India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, nine more people, including six children, have died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) since last Friday (November 13), the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported. The latest casualties have brought the death toll due to different types of brain fever to 515 in eastern districts since the beginning of the year. On Monday (November 16), 16 new patients afflicted with the disease were admitted to various government hospitals, an additional director of health, L.P. Rawat, said. The BRD Medical College and other hospitals of the region have cumulatively totaled some 2,947 patients infected with JE and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) this year. ProMed mail noted that the etiological agent responsible for AES has not been determined. JE has a clear seasonal variation and the current outbreak has been ongoing since January this year. Unusually, the frequency of the virus is increasing at a time of year when JE activity usually decreases, which is usually between the months of May and October. The virus' main hosts are domestic pigs and water birds and are found only in Asia.  JE kills approximately 15,000 people of the estimated 50,000 cases reported annually. Among the survivors, up to 75 percent suffer from disabilities, including paralysis and mental retardation. A mild infection may occur without apparent symptoms other than a fever and headache, but a more severe infection has symptoms of high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, occasional convulsions and spastic paralysis.
