Japanese Encephalitis outbreak in eastern India leaves at least 30 dead

According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), at least seven more children have died due to Japanese Encephalitis in India's eastern Uttar Pradesh state. The latest deaths bring the death toll for the disease to 30 this month, the PTI reported. Additional Director (Health) L. P. Rawat said that the deaths were reported in Mahrajganj, Kushinagar and Gorakphur districts. He added that 18 new patients suffering from the disease have been admitted to various hospitals in the region. Rawat said that 138 patients suffering from encephalitis are undergoing treatment at BRD Medical College Hospital, while seven others are undergoing treatment in government hospitals in adjoining districts, PTI reported. Rawat added that so far, 503 have died out of 2,864 patients suffering from the disease so far this year. Japanese Encephalitis is a mosquito-borne disease that causes high fevers, vomiting and can sometimes lead to comas and death. The mosquitoes transmit the virus from pigs and birds to humans.
