Case count at 710 as dengue fever spreads through India's capital

India, Nov 13, 2009

Despite measures implemented to curb the spread of dengue fever, India's capital, New Delhi, continues to see an increasing number of cases.  On Wednesday (November 11), 45 new infections were reported, while Thursday (November 12) saw 38 new infections, bringing the total case count to 710 since the beginning of the year, the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) reported. Among all cases, only two deaths, a 15-year-old boy and a nine-year old boy, have been confirmed. The capital's health minister, Kiran Walia accused the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday (November 9) of not taking measures to check the spread of the disease. Walia announced that it would be mandatory for authorities of private and public hospitals to monitor dengue patients in their vicinity and to give details of these patients in their hospitals on a routine basis to the state nodal officer. Additionally, the Delhi government decided to intensify the dengue awareness campaign in the capital.  Public notices, advertisements and "dos and donts" will be issued to spread awareness about the mosquito-borne illness, Walia noted. Walia also asked the people not to wash their cars, bikes and scooters to prevent water accumulation in streets and pits. On Tuesday (November 10), the union health ministry admitted that the problem was "massive" and expressed concern over the transmission of the disease in New Delhi. Civic authorities have implemented a crackdown by imposing fines on people for allowing water to stagnate, which provide ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. According to health officials, more than 200 people were fined in the last week after stagnant water was found accumulating at their homes, IANS reported on Sunday (November 8). N.K. Yadav, Chief Medical Officer, MCD reported that as many as 1,354 legal notices had been issued where conditions were suitable for mosquito breeding.  Dengue fever, which is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, causes symptoms of high fever, rashes, headaches and muscle and joint pain. Most dengue infections cause relatively mild illness, but some can progress into dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is a severe and often fatal complication of the disease.
