Eleven tribespeople die from mystery disease in eastern India
India, Sep 25, 2009
Health officials in India's eastern Jharkhand state say that 11 tribespeople have died from a mysterious disease in one month in the state's Latehar district. The two latest deaths were reported from Champa village in Mahuadand on Sunday (September 20), the civil surgeon of the district, Aron Tigga said, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI). According to Pradip Waski, a health official with the disease surveillance program, officials were trying to learn more about the mystery disease and would take preventive measures after a surveillance team assessed people from the tribe and those living in a nearby area, the PTI reported. Tigga said that the district administration would accept the help of the central government if the situation warrants it. In describing the disease, Tigga said that infected people became ill all of a sudden, suffered from stomach problems and their skin turned yellow, PTI reported. According to analysts from ProMed-mail, although the information is very scarce, diarrhea and jaundice could be signs of hepatitis A or leptospirosis, among the more likely diagnoses. If fever was present, malaria could also be a possibility, ProMed-mail reported.
