Diarrhea outbreak in eastern India leaves 26 dead

India, Sep 04, 2009

An Indian state minister said this week that an outbreak of diarrhea in eastern India has claimed at least 26 lives.  Health Minister Prasanna Acharya said that the deaths were reported in several villages in Kalahandi district in eastern Orissa state, according to the BBC. Local newspapers report a higher death toll, saying 38 people have died, the BBC reported. Health officials say that 237 people have been admitted to hospitals. According to the BBC, a team of doctors from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) has traveled to the affected villages to investigate the outbreak. Acharya said that 100 doctors are traveling in mobile medical vans to the affected areas due to a reported shortage of doctors in the district because of its remote location. According to the BBC, officials say that consumption of contaminated water and rotting food by people may have led to the deaths. Drinking water often comes from waterfalls and drains in the area, which are usually contaminated, the BBC says. The state government on Friday (September 4) also reported a few cases of cholera and has offered a cash award for any person volunteering to bring a cholera patient to the hospital, according to the BBC. The government is hoping the reward will work as an incentive for people to report people suffering from the disease. At least three cases of cholera were detected in Kalahandi. Officials say that many people living in remote villages refuse to go to hospital despite suffering from the disease. According to the BBC, more than 100 people died in a major outbreak of cholera two years ago in Kalahandi, Bolangir and Koraput districts of Orissa.
