China calls for increased measures following bird flu death
China, Jun 18, 2010
On Saturday (June 12), Chinese officials called for heightened measures against the possible spread of bird flu following the death of a woman who died in central China from the disease on June 3, according to a report by Xinhua. Officials have urged health officials at all levels to increase prevention and control measures on respiratory diseases as the country's southern areas are entering into peak flu season, according to Xinhua. Health officials at all levels, especially in Shanghai and Guangzhou, the host cities for the 2010 World Expo and the Asian Games, were asked to formulate emergency plans to cope with the possible spread of the disease, according to the health ministry's Web site. The ministry also said that officials should report and respond quickly to unidentifiable pneumonia, and added that they should also prepare equipment and pharmaceuticals to cope with possible outbreaks of respiratory diseases, such as bird flu, Xinhua reported.
