Tropical storm Nangka leaves eight dead in the Philippines, moves over South China Sea
Philippines, Jun 25, 2009
Disaster officials in the Philippines said Thursday (June 25) that the death toll from tropical storm Nangka rose to eight from six people reported Wednesday (June 24), while 11 others remained missing after Nangka (known locally as Feria) triggered widespread flooding, a tornado and a landslide. According to the Associated Press (AP), Nangka had winds of 34 mph (55 kph) and gusts up to 56 mph (90 kph) and moved into the South China Sea, west of the capital, Manila, overnight. The national disaster agency said that two people were killed when a landslide buried a house in southern Cagayan de Oro city after days of rain. Four of the deaths occurred when a tornado struck a fishing boat that had taken cover in a cove, in the town of Perez in Quezon province, located around 70 miles (110 km) southeast of Manila. Two others died from floods in central Cebu province on Tuesday (June 23). Additionally, officials said that 11 people, including five fishermen, were missing in eastern Samar and nearby regions. The storm first hit eastern Samar province on Tuesday (June 23), with sustained winds of 46 mph (75 kph). According to the Philippines' National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), around 10,000 people were stranded aboard hundreds of ferries and motorboats, which were ordered to remain docked, the AP reported. According to the AP, the storm destroyed around 70 houses in Samar and in nearby Romblon province, including 20 homes that were destroyed by a tornado. Officials said that classes were suspended in central provinces and Manila. Weather forecasters said that the storm was expected to track northwest towards the Taiwan Strait this weekend. In early May, Typhoon Chan-hom, known locally as Typhoon Emong, struck the northern island of Luzon and left at least 50 people dead. Chan-hom struck just a few days after Typhoon Kujira swept across the northeastern region of Bicol, killing at least 27 people. Nangka is the sixth storm to hit the Philippines this year. Around 20 storms hit the country each year.
