Thai officials report HFMD outbreak in Phuket

Local officials from the Phuket City Municipality, on Phuket Island in southern Thailand, have issued an advisory warning parents to be aware of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD). According to the Phuket Gazette, more than 70 children in Phuket have already contracted HFMD this year.
Northern Thailand issues alert of bird flu outbreak

Thailand's northern province of Nan issued an alert of a possible bird flu outbreak following the deaths of nearly 100 poultries, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday (November 12). Nan's livestock department collected samples from the dead poultry and sent them to nearby province, Lam-pang, where a regional office of the National Institute of Animal Health is located, for testing and examination, an official said.

A chikungunya outbreak continues to escalate in Phuket, Thailand despite the majority of news and attention being focused on the battle against the influenza A (H1N1) virus that is steadily spreading across the globe. According to the Bangkok Post, the southern provinces have been the hardest hit, with almost 8,000 cases reported in Songkhla alone as of late May.

Violence continued to afflict Thailand's south on Tuesday (June 30) as more bombings and gun attacks caused more deaths and injuries. In Narathiwat province, separatist militants are suspected to be responsible for killing an Islamic teacher and his teenaged friend in a drive-by shooting late on Monday (June 29), the Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

At least three people were reported injured by bomb blasts in Thailand's restive south on Friday (June 26), officials said. In one incident, a bomb exploded on a road in southern Narathiwat province on Friday morning, wounding a policeman who was part of a teacher protection unit.

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia over their disputed border have resurfaced, with Thailand putting its troops on alert, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Tensions between the two countries escalated again after Thailand asked the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to reconsider its decision to list an 11th century Hindu temple, Preah Vihear, as the World Heritage Site under the care of neighboring Cambodia.
