Dengue fever case count nears 55,000 in Philippines

Local cases of dengue fever in the Philippines are rising at an alarming rate, and the Philippine Health Department warns that by the end of 2010, cases may increase to 80,000, Xinhua news agency reported. This year, the mosquito-borne disease has rapidly spread, infecting 54,659 people nationwide as of August 14, according to local online media site www.gmanews.tv on Tuesday (August 31).

Provincial health officials in Rizal province in the Philippines say that they have seen a significant rise in dengue and malaria cases in recent months. According to the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation Engineer Alberto Pinon, the malaria and dengue coordinator of the Provincial Health Office (PHO), said that more than 300 cases of malaria have been recorded in various parts of the province as of July, with most cases coming from remote and upland villages in Taytay municipality.

Health officials in the Philippines told United Press International (UPI) that dengue fever has killed at least 23 people, mostly children, since the beginning of the year, and has already reached alert levels in other states in the country. In southern Zamboanga City, the mosquito-borne illness has afflicted at least 1,052 others, alarming health officials to strengthen efforts against the disease.
Measles cases reach nearly 1,800 in the Philippines

According to the Philippines' Department of Health's National Epidemiology Center (NEC), the number of measles cases has reached almost 1,800, the Malaya reported on May 21. According to the Malaya, an NEC Disease Surveillance report from April 10 said that a total of 1,794 measles cases have been confirmed since January 1.
Malaria outbreak reported in southern Philippines

The Philippine's southern province of Mindanao is fighting a malaria outbreak in North Cotabato that has already affected at least 43 people since January 2010, the Inquirer.net reported on Saturday (April 24). A report released by the Integrated Provincial Health Office on April 21 said that cases of malaria had been recorded in the towns of Tulunan, President Roxas, Carmen, Banisilan and in Kabacan.

The Health Secretary of the Philippines, Esperanza Cabral, said on Thursday (March 4) that she would seek more public funds to distribute condoms among high-risk groups after Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases jumped to a national high of 143 people in January 2010, Reuters reported. According to Cabral, the number of people diagnosed with HIV in January is the highest reported number since the disease was first detected in the country in 1984.

Health officials in the Philippines have declared a measles outbreak in six areas of the country and have heightened the alert status. According to the Manila Times, the Department of Health (DoH) on Monday (February 22) declared an outbreak in Baseco Compound and Moriones in Tondo, Manila; Barangay Pulang Lupa in Las Pinas City; Central Market in Dasmarinas, Cavite; San Francisco town in Quezon province; and Balabagan town in Lanao del Sur.

The Philippine Department of Health (DoH) continues to be on "heightened alert" as leptospirosis makes its way around flood-ravaged northern cities caused by back-to-back typhoons in September, the Philippine's Daily Inquirer reported on Wednesday (October 28). As of Wednesday, the WHO Philippines Health Cluster Situation Report stated that leptospirosis had caused at least 210 deaths nationwide since Tropical Storm Ketsana (Typhoon Ondoy) struck the northern Philippines.

As of Thursday (October 22), Philippine health officials reported that the flood-borne bacterial disease, leptospirosis, had killed at least 148 people after floodwaters from two powerful typhoons - Ketsana and Parma - lingered. Infections have affected people in the capital, Manila, and outlying suburbs, while nearby provinces of Rizal and Laguna have also reported cases.

In the northern Philippine province of Quezon, government troops clashed with New People's Army (NPA) communist rebels on Wednesday morning (July 1). Government troops, consisting of soldiers from the Philippine Army's 76th Infantry Battalion and police operatives, collided with an undetermined amount of NPA rebels in Cawayan village, Lopez town early in the morning, Senior Superintendent Elmo Francis Sarona, the officer-in-charge of the Quezon provincial police, told the Inquirer.net.

Disaster officials in the Philippines said Thursday (June 25) that the death toll from tropical storm Nangka rose to eight from six people reported Wednesday (June 24), while 11 others remained missing after Nangka (known locally as Feria) triggered widespread flooding, a tornado and a landslide. According to the Associated Press (AP), Nangka had winds of 34 mph (55 kph) and gusts up to 56 mph (90 kph) and moved into the South China Sea, west of the capital, Manila, overnight.

Investigations are underway after two Philippine officials were killed in separate incidents in the Philippines on Wednesday (June 24) night, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported. A senior health official monitoring the spread of the influenza A (H1N1) virus, commonly known as swine flu, in the southern Philippines and his 15-year-old daughter were shot at around 7:00 PM on Wednesday, as they were on their way home in Davao City on the restive south island of Mindanao, the Manila Times said.
