authorities seek food aid for 100,000 food-insecure in Ghor
Authorities
in the western province of Ghor are appealing for 1,733 tons of food aid to
feed more than 22,500 families, or some 112,500 individuals, severely affected
by rising food prices. According to the UN Integrated Regional Information
Networks (IRIN), several non-governmental organizations, including World
Vision, Afghan Aid, and Coordinating Humanitarian Affairs, and some local
government bodies have identified tens of thousands of "vulnerable"
people in all of Ghor's 10 districts at risk of starvation in the absence of
urgent food aid. Rising food prices coupled with drought and lack of quality
seeds, fertilizers and other agricultural requirements paint a bleak picture of
the area's agricultural outlook. According to the UN Food and Agriculture
Organization, in the event of a poor 2008 harvest, most of Ghor's over 500,000
population that mainly relies on agriculture and livestock as its main source
of income would likely be dependent on food aid for months.

A rapid food needs

assistance to feed its vulnerable population.
